LESOTHO QUESTION AND ANSWER SERVICE (LEQAS)

The Lesotho Question and Answer Service (LEQAS) is a scheme that is supported by The Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA) with the aim of strengthening agricultural information for relevant users, primarily farmers. Lesotho through the National University of Lesotho Library is a beneficiary of this scheme.

PARTNERS

  • National University of Lesotho
  • Agricultural Information Services (AIS)
The major hosting institutions, namely National University of Lesotho Library, which is the national node, and the Agricultural Information Services (AIS) Library of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security were selected to host the Service and are collaborating in an effort to achieve an efficient and effective service nationwide.

PUBLICATIONS

The service has a range of publications on agricultural information. These materials include books, pamphlets, Journal and CD-ROMs. The materials can be accessed in the NUL Library

ACCESS TO ONLINE DATABASES

LEQAS clients are urged to use four electronic resources that are accessible online or within the NUL Library as well as AIS library. Among several electronic databases relevant to LEQAS is, first, a portable LanTEEAL which provides journals on agriculture (local area network, the essential electronic agricultural library). The database can be accessed at the NUL Library and Agric Information Services (AIS) Library of the Ministry of Agric and Food Security at anytime during working hours. Secondly is AGORA, which provides global online access research in agriculture and related biological environmental and social science journals. It provides abstracts and full text for agricultural journals. The third online database is HINARI which is a collection of the latest information in public health bioscience and related science journals. The fourth is OARE that provides online access to research in environmental sciences journals.

Photocopying and printing services are also available.

LEQAS is making progress

We are pleased to announce that, through the generous support of CTA, Lesotho Question and Answer Services (LEQAS) has entered Phase III of its activities.

PHASE I                   2008-2009

The project was conceived and successfully launched. At this stage, the scheme operated under UOFS and mainly the Programme for Agricultural Information Services (PRAIS). It was given the name LEQAS.

PHASE II                   2009-2010

LEQAS started operating on its own. Its main thrust was Radio programmes which began in Radio Lesotho and Catholic Radio, in corporation with AIS. LEQAS focused on, and corperated with farmers through institutions and farmers associations such as LEHOFA, Thulare Farm and LENAFU.

PHASE III                   2011

This phase is still emphasizing the promotion of LEQAS through radio programmes, researchers and expert time. It also utilizes the telephone through Toll Free and mobile devices. Above all, it will look at the impact and outcomes through events comprising agricultural shows at district and national levels, and go further to recognize the best users of LEQAS. The Executive Committee has already met to pledge its unwavering support.

But in Lesotho, LEQAS contacts are the coordinating office within the National University of Lesotho Library - Roma and Agricultural Information Services (AIS) in Maseru. The Advisory Board comprises individuals in the four regions of the country. They are at the Faculty of Agriculture, Agric College in Hlotse.
