Thomas Mofolo Library: Services

 

MEMBERSHIP

Membership falls within two distinct categories, namely:

  • Internal Members
  • External Members
  Internal Membership
  This is the main category. it encompasses full membership which is open to all bona fide students of the NUL, staff members and affiliates.
  External Membership
  Whereas the Library has an open-door policy by which walk-in users are welcomed, members of the public are urged to make arrangements in advance to ensure that their enquiries and needs will be met. Such arrangements demand formal registration that may entitle them to borrow materials. Institutional membership through payment of annual fees in convenient and the most recommended.

CLIENTELE FACILITIES AND SERVICES

The NUL Library at Roma, in maseru and Mohale's Hoek attracts learners as the principal clients who physically visit the service points in great numbers. On account of their being in a position to access most electronic resources from their offices, lecturers and researchers visit the library in comparatively fewer numbers.

Ativities at the branch andsite libraries are coordinated and harmonized at Thomas Mofolo Library where a distance learning desk may be contacted. The funcitons of the distance learning team include:

  • The development of hybrid library/documentation and information service
  • Providing a link between the Library and its partners, namely the public, school and private libraries

BORROWING ENTITLEMENTS

Members may use archival, museum and rare items for reference only. The library also provides a short loan facility by which mainly lecturers lend their materials to specified learners. For long term borrowing entitlements are shown below:

Part-time students 2 (IEMS) 2 weeks
External members 5 Depens on type of membership

Clients do not need to physically go to the library to renew the borrowed materials. Except where materials are already reserved for the next user, renewal may be made through any possible method such as a letter, fax or telephone.

SERVICES:

The services offered by the Thomas Mofolo Library (TML) are:

    Reading Space and Study Carrels
    Description: Thomas Mofolo Library is fully furnished to allow users to read materials within the library.
    Short and Long Term Loans
    Description: Library members have specific borrowing entitlements for different types of members. Only members may borrow items out of the Library. Refer to the different member status.
    Reference Services
    Description: A comprehensive catalogue is available. The catalogue allows easy searching of referenced materials. This catalogue is available electronically.

    Internet Facilities
    Description: Wireless hotspots allow Library users with laptop machines to access information services. The Library also has 77 workstations in the internet cafe which have full Internet connectivity where students access internet. An equipped information literacy laboratory is also available.
    CD-ROM Search Services
    Description: Users can search for CD-ROM materials and materials on other digital media.
    Interlibrary Loan / Document Delivery
    Description: Internal members wishing to access materials not available within the Library service may contact the InterLibrary Loan Coordinator who, on behalf of clients may borrow from the Southern African Bibliographic Network (SABINET) to shich NUL is a member. In addition, the Library may introduce its clients to a number of libraries in Lesotho and to the neighbouring University of the Free State in South Africa, that may facilitate use of their collections for a stipulated period

    Photocopying and Binding
    Description: The Library provides affordable services through a card operating facility. Photocopying of library materials is subject to the provisions of the Copyright Act of 1989 as applied to Lesotho. The bindery services are mainly for binding and repairing the Library's own items. Clients are however, allowed to order permissible binding services such as student reports and lecturer's teaching manuals and notes. Charges are revised from time to time.
    Lesotho Question and Answer Service (LEQAS)
    Description: The library offers the service to strenthen agricultural information for relevant users, primarily farmers with the support from the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA).
